  11.           A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Caltech ì
  12. ì
  13. and the U.S. Army has been established, and is expected to  ì
  14. ì
  15. result in significant new project activity at Caltech's Jet ì
  16. ì
  17. Propulsion Laboratory for the Army.
  18.  
  19.           The MOU, signed Thursday, April 1, 1982, by ì
  20. ì
  21. Assistant Secretary of the Army Dr. Jay R. Sculley, Caltech ì
  22. ì
  23. President Marvin L. Goldberger, and JPL Director Dr. Bruce C. ì
  24. ì
  25. Murray, initiates a long-term relationship for development of ì
  26. ì
  27. major prototype and research programs by JPL in specific ì
  28. ì
  29. areas, including autonomous systems, information systems and ì
  30. ì
  31. technology, remote sensing instrumentation, telecommunica-ì
  32. ì
  33. tions and navigation.

  35.           It is expected that these efforts will occupy ì
  36. ì
  37. approximately 300 engineers and scientists at the Laboratory.  ì
  38. ì
  39. The first projects will start as early as fiscal year 1983.

  41.           JPL is an operating division of Caltech, performing ì
  42. ì
  43. scientific research and development using facilities provided ì
  44. ì
  45. by NASA.
